Occupation: School Board President, Attorney, Parent
Education and Qualifications:
I am President of the Palo Alto Unified School Board, an attorney, and a former teacher. My husband is Ward Hanson, an economist at Stanford. We have two daughters. Both benefited from the excellent academics and youth and teen programs of PAUSD. My top priorities on the School Board are to ensure outstanding academics, taught by excellent teachers, in schools where students connect and thrive.

Parents are moving to PAUSD because of its leading schools. High property values and enrollment growth reflect this. Handling this enrollment well is key. As an active Board member, and working with parents and community leaders, I helped guide PAUSD's necessary bond and parcel measures in 2008 and 2010 to over 77% voter support. Project and fund priorities and oversight are the Board's responsibility. We have purchased new property for growth, construction is on time and on budget, and buildings, play areas, and open spaces display the sustainability I championed. We are adding math, science, and social science classrooms. Critically, we avoided cutting teachers.

Attracting and retaining great teachers is fundamental. Our record is excellent during my tenure. I remain committed to competitive salaries, professional evaluation, collaboration, and technology.

In the heart of Silicon Valley our curriculum should challenge and inspire students. In 2012, I supported and we adopted new graduation requirements so all graduates have the skills to be successful in a global society. I also supported student wellness initiatives, enhanced counseling, and improved arts and athletic facilities. These encourage our 12,300 students to be active and connected for their social, emotional, and physical health.

Managing a high performing district with fluctuating revenue and an operating budget of $163 million takes experience, time, and effective relationships with school partners like the PIE Foundation and PTA. As board member and President, I have worked closely in committees with state, county, and local elected officials. Sacramento continues to debate education funding that would slash our budget, and it is critical that PAUSD have experienced leaders active in these discussions.

Education is the gateway to the future. I am committed to giving our students multiple skills and opportunities to succeed. Serving is an honor, and I would appreciate your support.

Professional History: Business Law Faculty-Purdue; Probation Officer. Education: JD-Loyola-Chicago; MS-American; BA-Wisconsin.
