Candidate for
Board Member; Moreland School District

This information is provided by the candidate

What compelled me to run:

1) The one thing missing in the current board is representation from multiple areas in the district. Four of the five board members are from one area. I would imagine there is a financial barrier for most parents to consider running for school board as it is expensive and time-consuming. Having a well-rounded board with varied backgrounds and experience is essential! I would only be one voice but I am passionate about equal representation.

2) In my area I would estimate that 25% of the parents send their children to private, charter or home school. I think MSD is great, but it could be better. I have spent time talking to these parents to find out why they are voting with their feet. The predominant reason is they don't feel their children will receive the best education in MSD schools. If elected, I want to better understand this trend and reverse it. There will always be some parents who choose to homeschool, go to a charter or private school but the vast majority of parents in our area should have a compelling reason to send their children to Moreland schools.

3) I also am concerned about the future of the district with so many funding cuts the past several years. There are many challenges that lie ahead with potential new cuts. There are also ample opportunities with the possible opening of new Moreland school. Creative new approaches to increasing funding will be critical. I would like to see more arts and athletics in the district.

4) I feel MSD does not adequately involve their local neighborhoods in decision making or give enough information to nearby communities on what is happening at the district level. Often, if there is communication, it is after the fact. These communities are responsible for funding this district with tax dollars and deserve to know what the district is doing. Better communication and outreach efforts are essential for the continued viability of MSD.
