Ethics and Integrity

By Nancy C. Horton

Candidate for Council Member; City of Canyon Lake

This information is provided by the candidate
The main thing that will restore the public's confidence in their elected officials is for elected officials to behave in a way that epitomizes honesty, trustworthiness, and integrity.
My voting record is unblemished as far as conflicts of interest are concerned. It is crucial that elected officials fill out their 700 forms honestly. When a vote comes up that involves a client, partner in a loan, or business associate, the council member must declare the conflict and recuse himself. Fair Political Practice Commission Rules are clear. It is not the role of others to expose the conflict. The rules say it is the elected official who must openly call himself conflicted. We are not elected for personal gain. Our meager stipends don't make the office desirable. Service is the purpose for running for office, and cronyism only leads to trouble. Our city needs honest council members.
