Jurupa Valley only has 10 months until we cant pay our monthly bills

By Brian Scott Berkson

Candidate for Council Member; City of Jurupa Valley

This information is provided by the candidate
Current City Council has acted Fiscally Irresponsible, wasting your tax dollars chasing a dream, Rather they should have been looking for other ways to Save Jurupa Valley. 15 months is long enough to see that we need Better Leadership, I have experience to pull us through this tough time.
I find it hard to believe that the Governor will give back the money that he took from us in the first place. The City Council has made 6 trips to Sacramento and is spending more of our tax dollars trying to get the Legislature to reverse ... I find it hard to believe that the Governor will give back the money that he took from us in the first place. The City Council has made 6 trips to Sacramento and is spending more of our tax dollars trying to get the Legislature to reverse the decision. The sad reality is, we will probably never see those funds come back to Jurupa Valley, and City Council has been lethargic in trying to bring forth viable alternatives. As one of the 5 candidates for the 2 open City Council seat up for grabs on the November 6, 2012 election the City Manager and the Director of Finance advised the candidates during a special meeting with staff on Monday that there is only 10 months of funds available and then the City will be unable to pay its bills. Many businesses keep closing their doors and next is the closing of the Albertsons, Sav-On and Bank of America on Limonite. 100 more jobs Lost... The City Council has not done enough to bring businesses along with jobs into Jurupa Valley. As a Planning and Project Manager and small business owner, I work with City and County Departments on a daily basis and I understand the timeframes it takes to bring a project to life, I also know that it easily could have been done since July 1, 2011 when we became Jurupa Valley. The Assistant City Manager George Wentz advised City Council candidates that they have not successfully attracted 1 new business into Jurupa Valley since we became a City. Furthermore, there are no development plans (which can bring much needed funding to the City) that are in plan check or have been issues permits to begin building. I just keep hearing assurances by City Council that we need to be patient. City Council has also stated that some developers would be willing to advance Developer Impact Fees, (our saviors?), I truly believe developers will only advance fees if they get concessions, and those are the Back Door Deals that could bring future development that you may not want in Jurupa Valley. If we continue to be patient as City Council suggests, we will suffer the final choice of Disincorporation or a Tax Increase. I am against TAX INCREASES; it only hurts the residents of Jurupa Valley. It is time for Better Leadership....... 15 months is long enough, and we need Better Leadership that will not wait for our Governor to Save Jurupa Valley, or for the inevitable Tax Increase City Council members plan to ask us for. I am also concerned with the City Council's fiscal irresponsibility, knowing we have a budget issues, they not only moved into the Sam's clothing store for a Council Chambers in addition to the City hall at a cost of about $52,200.00 more than they would have spent to continue renting the Jurupa Unified School District Board Room (based on the cost analysis provided to us by the City Manager on Monday), but last night agreed to a lease extension at a cost of $6,000.00 per month for rent. So when a City Council member tells you that the rent is only $1.00 per month, they have intentionally mislead you, they have not included the true costs of insurance, electricity, maintenance, audio equipment, phone, internet, etc. Jurupa Valley needs Better Leadership that can read between the lines and get the facts straight, transparency that we expect. Leadership that will focus on getting businesses and jobs back into our community, and who truly listens to those of us who Call Jurupa Valley Home. Be Smart this November when you vote, it is time for a change to Save Our City..... BRIAN SCOTT BERKSON.
