school funding

By Don "DON" Sedgwick

Candidate for Board Member; Saddleback Valley Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
The state funding system is in need of a wholesale overhaul. My involvement at the state level will allow me to influence that change.
Did you know that Saddleback receives about $1,000 less per school than Placentia, Santa Ana, and many other school districts? It is so because of an antiquated, unfair, archaic system which deemed south orange county "agrarian land" decades ago, which resulted in less than our fair share of funding from the state. The state has never revised those initial, flawed revenue limits. There are also various other pots of school funding that are unfairly distributed across the state. Over the years, we have changed from a system in which the local governments had the power and authority to both decide on the right amount of revenues needed, then spend those revenues as they saw fit. Now, the state decides what we get, and how we spend it. That is bad government. It has resulted in a state that is unmanageable, and has caused a detachment from citizens being involved in local governance. We need to return to the days of local control. We could raise what we need, and spend it where we should. I will work to make those changes. Without those changes, we will continue to spin our wheels, trying to prevent the state from hurting our kids too much. We need to do more than that.

In the meantime, we should put our kids first with every decision we make. There are unions for all groups of employees in school districts. There are PTA's for parents. We, as school board members, must be the protectors of the children's interests. I consider it my mission to protect the children, and their educational interests.
