LBUSD "Good News" Fact Sheet
  • Five year trend of increasing LBUSD API Scores: From 846 in 2007 to announced 904 base API in June 2012
  • Anticipated district-wide API increase because all schools in the district have grown based on preliminary analysis of student results
  • CFD Refinancing completed August 2012 will save taxpayers over $5.2M
  • District budget is financially sound with healthy reserves. We are prudent fiscal stewards of our resources
  • Class sizes continue to be very low (lower than neighboring districts)
  • The LBHS PTA awarded the 2012 Outstanding PTA Unit Award for Fourth District PTA
  • Laguna Beach High School Receives Full 6-Year WASC Accreditation 2012
  • Newsweek Ranks Laguna Beach High School One of Nation's Best Public High Schools 2012
  • The California Business for Education Excellence (CBEE) selected all four LBUSD schools, El Morro Elementary School, Top of the World Elementary School, Thurston Middle School and Laguna Beach High School for the CBEE 2011 Honor Roll.
  • LBHS: National Blue Ribbon School and CA Distinguished School
  • TMS, ELM, TOW all CA Distinguished Schools
  • Salad Bars to Schools: LBUSD Food Services received three new state of the art salad bars from the Salad Bars to school Program during the 2011/2012 school year.
  • Salad bars have been available at three of the four LBUSD school sites since 2005; staff has identified a location to place a new salad bar at Thurston Middle School so all schools will have salad bars
  • Chef to Schools: Staff training provided by Chef Luigi Sysco corporate chef 2011/2012 school year; additional training held August 27th with added support throughout the school year
  • Farm to Schools: Fresh, seasonal, sustainably grown "organic" fruits and vegetables were introduced last year from OC Produce Great Park Irvine. Nutrition Services is looking forward to working with another local farm this year (South Coast Farms in San Juan Capistrano)
  • New two story modern classroom buildings and new rubberized play surfaces at ELM over past 5 years
  • Refurbished ticket/food kiosk at Football Stadium (LBHS) including new sound system
  • Upgraded softball field at Thurston, including accessibility improvements and equipment storage building
  • AP exam pass rate 89% at LBHS
  • LBUSD is one of fewer than 400 public school districts in the nation being honored by the College Board with a place on the 2nd Annual AP Honor Roll, for simultaneously increasing access to Advanced Placement coursework while maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP exams
  • ACT Scores at LBHS: English 26.0, Math 26.0, Reading 25.4, Science 24.8, Composite 25.7 (Average Composite in US is between 20-21). SAT available end of Sept. or early Oct.
  • Implementation of the Rachel's Challenge Program at TOW resulted in 98% of students never receiving a behavior referral
  • Pearson's SuccessMaker continues to be used regularly in the elementary and middle school levels, and the data has shown positive results
  • Tech Staff is assisting with the preparation of the move to the Common Core State Standards by creating a large section of the website specifically devoted to these standards
  • Implementation of successful online student registration this year
