Competitve Bidding for Waste Disposal

By Shari L. Horne

Candidate for Council Member; City of Laguna Woods

This information is provided by the candidate
I Believe competition can lower our rates and provide greater efficiency for recycling.
I believe competition works and could save the City money if we send out requests for bids to other companies and our current waste disposal company. We have added recycling in a big way to the City and parts of the contract need to be looked at. I would like to see the City and the Communities recover more money from their recyclables. Village residents want newspapers to be co-mingled and we want to receive revenue for them. The old black toters we rent to hold the newspapers in parts of the Community can be removed. Old newspapers are a valuable commodity even mixed with clean recycling. The large red dumpsters are no longer filled with garbage and could be replaced with smaller, less expensive containers Cans and bottles generate money now for the City, but a whole new look at the pricing and the structure of reimbursements should be examined for the most cost effective solutions for the whole community. Recycling is a great way to save on tipping fees by moving the bulk of recyclable trash out of the landfills to be re-purposed. Reusing, re-purposing, recycling and renewables are the way of the future, by saving our resources.
