Candidate Statement
Good Evening. My name is Jim Cunneen and I am very pleased to be running for a seat on the Board of Trustees for the Fountain Valley School District. This journey for me has been a time of training, analyzing, collaborating, and reaching out to the thousands of households and voters in our District - some of you are in the audience tonight.

I entered this race for four main reasons:

1. I believe I have qualities to be an effective Trustee;
2. I am a critical thinker and have the courage to inquire about educational issues;
3. I am a successful fiscal manager; and
4. I deeply care about Fountain Valley School District students.

QUALITIES

I am married to my beautiful bride of 19 years, who is a Fountain Valley native. We were married at a local church on Ward Street. We have five children who attend or recently were promoted from our schools. As a Fountain Valley resident for nearly 20 years, I am loyal to our students and their parents, and the community at large. I hold a Doctor of Law and an Engineering degree, and work as a licensed Civil Engineer and Regional Manager. I am focused, reasonable, objective, oversee budgets, and am fiscally responsible. I am committed to these principles and will integrate these during our meetings, during site activities, and when making decisions.

CRITICAL THINKER / COURAGE TO INQUIRE WITH PROFESSIONAL COURTESY

My approach is to Listen > Research > Analyze > Solve Collaborately

It is important to be skilled listener, to gather all the facts and data, and to get a clear comprehension of the issues. Then diligently research all available resources to understand the education codes, policies, and precedents in place. After identifying issues and rules, then analyze the facts and data presented in a logical, objective manner. Finally collectively solve issues and then move forward with an action that directs the staff in the best interest of students. This approach requires commitment, hard work, and thoughtful discussions.

SUCCESSFUL FISCAL MANAGER + DISCIPLINED SPENDING

As a Civil Engineer Manager, I am responsible for over $10 million a year in revenue and expenses. Our District is facing fiscal challenges including a projected loss in a few years based on current trends. I will bring my methods of disciplined spending to the Board, looking at expenditures in all categories. This approach will elicit discussion and careful scrutiny.

DEEP CARE FOR THE STUDENTS

My interest in serving on the board is motivated by a strong desire that all 6,340 of our fine students get the very best education. I care deeply about their academic growth, their ability to enjoy a safe school experience, resulting in higher test scores, as they benefit from the best practices, delivered by effective teachers.
