2009-2012 Saving the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary Habitat

By Robert A. Pacelli

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Pacific Grove

Being a videographer allows one to see the world in a unique way...Butterflys and young children dressed up in handmade monarch wings for a small town parade brings a smile to most people's face.
The spirit of the Butterfly Sanctuary has been a source of comfort and beauty to my wife Clemencia and myself all the years we have lived in Pacific Grove. Sometimes the work I am asked to do in the world is painful to witness. In those moments, wherever I may be in the world, it is possible to remember the beauty of the Monarch Butterfly resting near our Pacific Grove home. When I came face to face with the devastation of the habitat...my heart ached. Do something...do something...do something... There was an alarm in my psyche motivating and guiding me to gather people who like myself were willing to get busy restoring the Sanctuary habitat. I am grateful to each and every person who came forward and made donations for a nursery tree, nurtured nectar plants in their own garden, came out and helped us weed the space, generously loaned equipment to move trees and worked side by side with me to restore our Sanctuary. People have offered campaign donations for signs and instead I find myself encouraging them to write a check to the local nursery for the Monarchs. I am mindful of how using every penny to preserve the Monarch Sanctuary is most important. A neighbor came up with the idea of a series of "Monarch Butterfly Cards" to keep the focus of the campaign clear. It seems my day revolves around the "urgent needs" of the Butterfly in their Sanctuary. I was recently invited to be a guest speaker far from Pacific Grove. A group of people who like many care about the beauty of these gentle "golden gifts" to our world. They encouraged me to get the message out in order to protect the species internationally. Thankfully the Monarch Butterfly returned to us in 2012. The sanctuary belongs to the Monarchs. The City, docents and countless visitors must respect the gift we share. We must remember and leave a legacy for the children... I was encouraged to run for City Council given my track record in getting impossible tasks done. Your vote is all I ask on this warm October day. Thank you for the ongoing support. Robert Pacelli
