Julie Pierce has deep ties to the Clayton community

Julie has actively served the citizens of Clayton since 1984, when the Pierce family moved to Clayton. Julie served on the Westwood Homeowner's Association Board prior to being appointed to the Clayton Planning Commission in 1987.

As parents of two Eagle Scouts, Julie & her husband Steve have always been actively involved in Scouting activities. Steve & Julie chartered Troop 484 in Clayton in 1988 with the sponsorship of the Clayton Business and Community Association. Steve has been an active Cubmaster and Scoutmaster since 1983. Julie served on many Troop committees as well as at the District Level of Scouting. Though their sons are grown with families of their own now, Steve continues to be an active Scouter for District and Council programs. Julie also served as Treasurer for Clayton Valley High School Grad Night in 1992 and 1994, when their sons were seniors.

Now semi-retired from Julie's Custom Dressmaking and Design business, Julie is widely known for her custom wedding and senior ball gowns as well as her fitting expertise. The flexibility of her home-based business allowed Julie to be at home for their sons while they were growing up as well as the time to devote to city business.

Julie has served on the Clayton City Council since 1992, serving four times as mayor. Over the years, she has worked with many community groups on projects for the betterment of the city. Many of those accomplishments are detailed elsewhere on this web page.

Julie serves Clayton and the region

Now the proud, active "Nana" to two Clayton grandchildren Julie is committed to the preservation of our scenic vistas, ridgelines, open spaces, and our award-winning trail system, while creating new recreational opportunities for our families.

On the regional level, Julie is actively involved in protecting local control as the region undertakes state required planning for future growth. As a 20-year member of the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA), serving twice as chair, Julie has been working on transportation, land use and growth management policy issues to benefit the people of Contra Costa for 25 years.

Julie was honored to be recognized by the Contra Costa Council in 1995 for the adoption of Contra Costa's very first Countywide Comprehensive Transportation Plan, and was honored by the San Francisco Chapter of the Women's Transportation Seminar with their 1998 Woman of the Year award.

Julie served as chair of Contra Costa's Shaping Our Future Policy Committee from 2000-2004, and brought elected officials and stakeholders from the cities and county together to develop a plan to strengthen the linkages between housing needs, jobs and transportation infrastructure. These efforts lead to the Urban Limit Line consensus which became a basic tenet in the successful renewal of Contra Costa's Measure J transportation investment program.

Julie is Vice President of the Association of Bay Area Government's (ABAG) Executive Committee, where she is a respected, effective voice for allowing cities to plan in ways that are suitable for their own residents. Julie also represents the Contra Costa cities on the ABAG Regional Planning Committee.

Planning for the future

We must plan now for the future we want for ourselves, our children and grandchildren while retaining the unique qualities that make our communities special.

Julie is a council member who is receptive to the citizens and their concerns, with the ability to put aside personal issues and respond to what the community needs. She is a leader with integrity, who communicates openly and honestly about issues. She is a team-builder who works cooperatively with all members of the community and city staff. Julie is a logical and independent thinker with the integrity and strength to make the tough decisions facing Clayton.
