Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Thomas E Baldocchi, Jr.

Candidate for
Board Member; Knightsen Elementary School District

This information is provided by the candidate

The Knightsen School District has done an excellent job of providing a great learning experience and providing for our students. The District has put away reserves funds that will provide for the Districts loan obligations for the next 2 fiscal years, this is something that the community should applaud the School Board and District Administration for. The District has strived to maintain small class sizes and provide that small town feel that makes Knightsen a special learning place.

As the districts reserves are used funds will have to come out of the general budget to make the loan, when this occurs it is important that we have a School Board member that will.

  • Focus on what is best for all students. I will focus on student achievement and implement policies that will ensure success for all students.

It is important to remember that if changes or cuts are to be made that we do not loose site on what we are trying to achieve for our students.

  • Have a clear vision for the district. I will work with the Board to set the vision and goals, and we will measure the success of the District and Superintendent against the goals.

By having a clear vision and stated goals the board will be focused on what we are striving for in the future.

  • Work as a team. I will collaborate with others and be respectful of the other Board members and Superintendent.

This is important, it is a great quality to be passionate about our District but not be emotional, to the point that is detrimental to the goals of the Board. I will make sound educated decisions based on information provided and information I research.

  • Adopt a fiscally sound district budget. I will pay attention to finances and regularly monitor the fiscal health of the district.

It is one of the most important jobs a School Board Member can do. I will vote to adopt a fiscally sound budget that provides for our obligations to the students.

  • Communicate our actions to the community. Through public discourse and written reports. I believe that the school board members should keep the public informed of the district's progress and challenges.

Throughout the community there are many residents that do not have any interaction with the School. It is important to reach out to them and keep them informed, let them know they are welcome at their school and any public functions.

There is always the chance that the community will support the School District and the State of California will reinstate funding. If this was to occur and the general budget would not have to be cut it is important not to forget the hard times, and in addition to the five points stated earlier I will strive to:

  • Build back up our reserves

The State of California requires a percentage of the annual budget be put away in reserve, exceeding that minimum could be fiscally responsible during un-certain economic times.

  • Provide and enhance Music and Sports programs

Music and Sports are an important part of a school. They provide our students with life experiences that one can only recognize when it's gone. Music and sports provide additional education, team building, provide community and school pride, and its fun for students, parents and the community.

  • Upgrade our technology and curriculum

As technology is ever changing and expanding we need to provide the tools needed to meet the future of education. In addition to computers or internet based curriculum we need to be able to maintain our investment in technology.

  • Provide our Facilities with needed upgrades and support services

Maintenance on the original Knightsen campus is important, if Old River Elementary was able to re open the Multipurpose/ Cafeteria should be one of the 1st major undertakings addressed. This would be covered by developer fees as new houses are built.

  • Provide our teachers clerical support or Instructional Aids

By providing clerical support or re- instating Instructional Aids teachers will have more time to concentrate on expanding learning techniques and providing unique learning experiences that teachers pride themselves with.

  • Maintain small class sizes.

Class size is paramount to student success. Being able to dedicate more time per student will help to ensure student achievement.
