Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Richard Flint

Candidate for
Member City Council; City of Oroville

This information is provided by the candidate

My City Council philosophy includes:

Fiscal responsiblity. Obviously, we cannot spend what we do not have; but less obvious is the fact that we do not have to spend everything that we have. We can save for a rainy day, a better deal, or a better project. Economists refer to this as front-loaded opportuniey cost avoidance. My Grand-mother put it more plainly; "it's not a bargain if you don't need it."

Listening to constituents, and ask relevant questions. Open discussion promotes clarity of thought; and many good ideas and potential solutions may reside amid the general chatter. Often the story behind the complaint is more telling than the complaint itself.

Intelligently analyzing problems, and propose reasonable and logical solutions. This means being able to recognize and accept the constraints of reality. Broaden the time perspective to look past the immediate, and towards the future; to anticipate (and perhaps alter)the consequences of an action or inaction. I would much rather take the time to do it right; than to have to do it over, and over, and over.

New faces means new ideas, new perspectives, and new approaches to old problems. Incumbency is a two-edged sword; which, while it may provide for continut\ity and historical cxontent, frequedntrly brings staleness, entrenchment, feelings of entitlement, and even arrogance. When different is good, expectging different results from the same people is fantasy.

Trust..A Council person is entrusted, by the voters, with the care and custody of the City. He or she should respect that trust, and serve with absolute honesty, integrity, and impartiality. Constituents should expect, and get, professional and courteous conduct at public meetings.
