San Lorenzo School Board + 2012 Election + Candidate Statement for Penny Peck

PENNY PECK

This is my first time seeking elected office. The San Lorenzo School Board has two administrators, and two retired school support staff members, so I thought someone who is a member of the California Teacher's Union and who has worked with teachers and students for over 25 years might be a good addition. As many of you know I was the Children's librarian in San Leandro, from 1986 to 2010, helping teachers and student find books for homework and to read for fun. We partnered with the schools to develop a homework center at the Washington Manor Branch Library, and led tours at the San Leandro History Museum and Casa Peralta. We also developed two landmark high school programs, College Bound and Job Bound. I am in the unique position of working with youth ages 0 to 18, so I don't just have one age or grade level as a priority.

I am also a life-long San Lorenzo resident, attending Lorenzo Manor, Bohannon Junior High, and San Lorenzo High. But I also served at the Washington Manor branch librarian, serving Arroyo High, Washington Manor Middle School, Dayton and Corvallis elementary schools. And I volunteer at the San Lorenzo Adult School preschool. So I can truly represent the entire district.

My priorities:

  • spend money at the classroom level
  • decrease class sizes
  • update our school buildings with green technology
  • transform the entire schoolyard into a learning environment
  • celebrate all our children, who represent many different cultures

I offer a common-sense approach to problem solving and working with administrators, teachers, parents, and other board members.
