Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Shirley Weber

Candidate for
Member of the State Assembly; District 79

This information is provided by the candidate

California must mean economic opportunity for everyone who works hard, studies well and plays by the rules.

That was the California my sharecropper parents found when they brought us to this Golden State. My parents found a great public school next to our public housing project. My father found a high-paying job in a steel mill helping to build our roads, schools and transit. I found access to a great public university that prepared me to earn a PhD and become one of the youngest professors ever at San Diego State University.

That's the California of our dreams + opportunity for every family: Great public schools, high wage jobs and access to an excellent and affordable college education.

That's the California I've been fighting for, as a School Board President who helped raise achievement; as Chair of Equal Opportunity working to boost jobs, particularly by promoting small businesses; and as a long-serving Department Chair at San Diego State mentoring a generation of leaders and creating opportunity for everyone.

And that's the California I will fight to bring back by making high wage jobs our state's highest priority, adequately funding public schools, and making college affordable so children and their parents can find life-long job training opportunities.

I'm proud our campaign has earned the support of Congressmembers Bob Filner and Maxine Waters, Senator Christine Kehoe, Assemblymember Toni Atkins, Councilman Tony Young, Honorable Donna Frye, Salvador Flor, Augustine Chavez and so many other leaders.
