Responsible leadership is needed to resolve fiscal challenges facing the County of Sonoma, including an underfunded pension and other retiree benefits system. The drain on the county general fund caused through pension abuse by highly compensated public officials can not continue if we want to have sufficient funds available for other retirees as well as public health, public safety, parks, libraries, animal services, roads, etc.

We need to support transparent and open governance, requiring competitive bidding as further explained in my California Commons column, Competitive Bidding Best - http://californiacommons.blogs.pressdemocrat.com/10234/competitive-bidding-best-2/ - to avoid anti-competive monopolies such as what has occurred for garbage hauling contracts throughout Sonoma County.

Sonoma County needs good jobs, in the private and public sectors. Our environment needs to be protected for a sustainable future and we need to enhance social justice for all within our diverse society.
