The benefits of a new stadium will far outweigh the cost and be spread throughout the entire county.
A new stadium is not a frivolous issue. Any potential source of new tax revenue and jobs is worthy of political discourse. Lets get serious. Here are the facts. Those who fought the construction of Petco Park are no where to be found. The reason is simple: Petco revitalized the Gas Lamp District creating jobs and tax revenue as predicted. Hotels, Condominiums, and restaurants, are at this moment filling the city's coffers with new tax revenue that did not exist before Petco. Now we have an opportunity to add to that very successful chapter in San Diego's history. The Chargers are an economic asset to our city and county and like the Padres, they are a part of our history, identity and a source of excitement and pride. If they leave, it will be an unmitigated disaster. The NFL is on record as stating that they would like to play the Superbowl in San Diego at least once every five years, but they won't come to Qualcomm because it is simply outdated. Keep in mind that San Diego has hosted three Superbowls with spectacular reviews. The NFL was ecstatic about the accommodations, the attractions, and of course the weather. The economic impact of each Superbowl has been huge. The first Superbowl brought in an estimated $450 million dollars to the city and county. The second and third brought in $600 and $750 million dollars respectively. And the money goes to cab drivers, bartenders, waitresses, hotel maids, and everyone else. Put these facts up against the arguments of the detractors and you might have a new perspective on the issue. And this does not take into consideration the annual financial benefits of a regular NFL season and playoffs!

Anyone who takes pride in our city and county and supports the creation of jobs and new tax revenue should enthusiastically support a new stadium. No doubt the cost of procurement and construction will be an issue to address. At this date, the costs are anticipated to be split between the Chargers, the NFL, and the City and perhaps the County of San Diego with the Chargers paying the lion's share. In my view, it will be money well spent.
