Eco Village from Dominican Hospital to 41st Ave.
I have called for the area around Dominican Hospital to 41st Ave, to be developed as an example of a healthy Sustainable Urban Core. Create a Classic Downtown, with a strong Ecological infrastructure. A PATTERN LANGUAGE, Christoper Alexander, can guide us in our approach. Green buildings that provide live/work opportunities in a walkable , bike friendly environment, served by major transportation corridors and public transportation will result from our efforts. Add exits at Chanticleer and So Rodeo Gulch for better access to this area. Bridge the freeway at Mattison Ln, so that there are safe pathways to Good Shepard School and Soccer field. Protect Rodeo Gulch as a liner park that connects the mountains to the sea and the Rail trail that crosses through it. Add Urban Farms and Community Gardens. Use porous pathways for people and the environment, so that the rain recharges our wells and eliminates the call for expensive, polluting, energy intensive desalination plants. Follow the EPA's guidelines on stormwater management. http://www.epa.gov/oaintrnt/stormwater/best_practices.htm Use rain gardens, bio-swalls, green roofs and living walls. Divert water to cisterns for rainwater harvesting for use in landscaping. Reduce, reuse and recycle our water so that we can do more with less and create a Garden City.

By doing infill in the appropriate places, we can save the open-spaces we love and the farm land for a strong organic, Bio-intensive region of family farms for Agro tourism. Build on the perception of Santa Cruz as the leader in Ecology, Organic Agriculture, Alternative Energy, Sports, Arts and Culture, so that we can share with others who come to visit our area for inspiration and guidance to create the future we all can thrive in. By good planning, preservation of our resources and helping others meet their true potential, we will move into a sustainable future, with reduced crime and incarceration and shared resource for the betterment of all.
