About Alexis Cerul

By Alexis Cerul

Candidate for Judge - Superior Court; County of Santa Clara; Office 5

This information is provided by the candidate
Alexis Cerul's legal career has been within the judiciary and has been dedicated to justly resolving disputes in a manner that demonstrates an unbiased examination of the merits and inspires confidence in the final result. Alex is a Judicial Staff Attorney for the judges of the Santa Clara County Superior Court. His principle duties are to provide objective review, advice, and research, on matters before the Court. As the leader at Criminal Division since 1998, he has participated in the adjudication of some of the most complex cases our county has seen. His work has helped shape California law insuring our liberties and public safety. This may be the most relevant experience desirable before transitioning to a judge.

Judicial Staff Attorneys work side by side with the judges. They assist with an independent and impartial analysis of the law and the attorneys' pleadings. They provide candid review, and collaborate on writing the statements of decision, which resolve many of the cases before the court. These skills, and the necessarily ingrained impartiality, translate directly to becoming a judge. Judicial Staff Attorneys are not trial lawyers or vigorous advocates for a side. Those skills are not the best preparation for the impartiality, and expertise in the law, which is required of a judge. The career of a Judicial Staff Attorney is one of neutrality and striving for justice in every individual case that they are required to play a part in.
