We need to make sure that our schools and public colleges have the resources to provide our children with the kind of quality education that they will need to compete in the economy of tomorrow.
We have to provide safe, high quality schools in Philadelphia. While the Philadelphia school district is attempting to fix the issues that have long plagued them we have to insure that there are alternatives for our children and families. I have continuously voted to expand and improve the EITC program and firmly believe that there can be a successful expansion of charter schools in the area. Moreover, we cannot undercut our children by denying funding to early educational programs. The most contentious battle within my term was fighting against draconian budget cuts that would shortchange our youth. Those same cuts were not only aimed at our kindergartners but at college students as well. I, with my colleagues, ensured that state related schools like Temple University were equipped to keep tuition at competitive and affordable rates.
