Important issues for the election:

By Carolyn F (Correll) Murphy

Candidate for Director; North Penn School District

Today's global economy requires that school districts prepare their studentw with a "world" class education. I want to work to restore trust between the different segments of the district. It is important to get the district financially back on track.
At a time when more than ever we need to put education at the forefront of our priorities, all one hears is, cut, cut, cut. Politicians think that money is wasted on education and it does not help. The very programs (foreign language, advanced math and science, cultural literacy, a sense of a world view, more foreign travel for a better understanding of ourselves and the world) are being slashed and seen as fluff. We need to teach more sooner and arm our children with self-confidence and compassion. This is the 21st Century and we need to prepare them to be able to compete.

All parts of the district need to work together in order for our students to get the most from their education. Teachers, administrators, school boards, and the community should respect each other and not resort to bullying. We are the role modals for our kids. They can't excell in an atmosphere of hostility.

The shortfall in public education is on everyone's mind. We need to explore new avenues for funding, whether it be to change legislatures' minds to find ways to restore some of the aid, go to the private sector, or scour the tax base to find new revenue. For the sake of our communities and our children, it must be done.
