Councilman Young's Statements on a Variety of Issues

By Wendell Young

Candidate for Council Member; City of Cincinnati

"It doesn't matter who you are, a good idea is a good idea."

Although Wendell Young is proud to be an endorsed Democrat for City Council, he has a long record of working with Republicans, Charterites, and Independents to get things done. As a Veteran, Police Sergeant, teacher, and civic leader, Wendell knows that things work best when everyone is working together. Wendell has dedicated his life to making Cincinnati a better place to live, and he looks to work with people who share that vision, regardless of their background or expertise.

"We have to remember that what made our city great in the past can keep us going in the future."

The hills of Cincinnati are one of those unique things that make our city great. That's why Wendell proposed looking at bringing back the incline system that helped to grow our city in the 19th century--and could help us revitalize key areas of our city in the 21st.

"Sometimes the little things make the biggest difference."

We all know that we need a replacement for the Brent Spence Bridge, but we also know that the big change is years away. Wendell realized that we need to take actions now to prevent more tragedy from occurring on this dangerous stretch of road. That's why he pulled together leaders from Cincinnati, Covington, and Washington to form the Brent Spence Safety Commission, which is proposing workable fixes for safety concerns.

"We all know Cincinnati is wonderful, but we need to make it easy for other people to see that too."

Unlike in most cities, it was against the law in Cincinnati for a taxi to pull over to pick up a potential passenger. Wendell knew that common-sense changes--like allowing people to hail a cab--would make Cincinnati a friendlier, more accessible place for locals and visitors alike.

"We need to respect our police officers, fire fighters, teachers, and all the people who wake up every day to make Cincinnati a better, safer place to live."

When Governor Kasich and the Ohio State House moved to limit the ability of civic and safety workers to bargain for quality standards, Wendell Young fought back. He stood up for what he believed in, testifying before the Ohio House of Representatives and sponsoring a Resolution supporting the rights of hardworking men and women in the City of Cincinnati and the State of Ohio.

"Before a single dollar is spent, we need to hear from you."

When actions were taken to spend potential incoming revenue from the Casino, Wendell put a stop to the process and sponsored a motion calling for a series of public hearings to decide how the people's money was going to be spent.
