By Olivia G. Martinez

Candidate for Board Member; Sequoia Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Our schools are known for their strong academic programs, excellence in athletics, Advanced Placement classes, program choice and overall campus environment. Redwood Continuation School has been recognized as a model in the state. Our four charter schools provide excellent choices and alternatives for students and parents. Beautiful, modern classrooms and school buildings are in evidence throughout the district.
When I first joined the board in 1999, our high schools were quite different. Parents were leaving the district in droves seeking private schools because they believed our high schools were underperforming and did not offer what they wanted for their children. Now, in 2011, we have waiting lists and are at almost full capacity because the schools offer such strong, desirable programs. We have installed top administrators, hired the best teachers and support staff and rebuilt our school buildings and grounds into the envy of the country. Our athletic facilities are top quality, and careful fiscal management has meant the Sequoia High School District is better prepared for the current fiscal crisis than most other districts in the state.

I am proud of our schools and the role I played in their transformation from mediocre to outstanding. I'm proud that parents no longer have to seek out private schools and that our students are safe, happy and able to maximize their full learning potential.
