Senator Yee is a 60-year resident of San Francisco and a 23-year veteran of public service to the city, previously and currently serving as:

• California State Senator, 2006 - Present
• California State Assemblymember, 2002 - 2006
• San Francisco Board Supervisor, 1996 - 2002
• San Francisco Board of Education, 1988 - 1996

Leland immigrated to America at age 3 and after attending San Francisco public schools, became the first person in his family to graduate from college. He received a Bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley, a Masters degree from San Francisco State University and a PhD from the University of Hawaii, all in Psychology. He and his wife Maxine have four children, all educated in San Francisco public schools.
