Transportation

By David Chiu

Candidate for Mayor; City of San Francisco

This information is provided by the candidate
To enhance San Francisco's quality of life, preserve our environment, and ensure our economic health, we must chart a course towards a more efficient and reliable transportation system that meets the needs of our residents.
In the 19th century, San Francisco invented the cable car and was a pioneer in public transportation. In the 21st century, we are tired of traffic gridlock, potholes that never seem to be filled, and Muni running late again. It's making our City less livable and less productive.

To enhance San Francisco's quality of life, preserve our environment, and ensure our economic health, we must chart a course towards a more efficient and reliable transportation system that meets the needs of our residents.

David regularly rides his bike, walks, takes public transit and cabs, and uses car share to get to City Hall and around the city. He knows our transportation issues first hand. He is committed to expanding public transportation choices for all residents and making our streets safer for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

As President of the Board of Supervisors, David worked with Mayor Newsom to reach an agreement in 2009 that blunted Muni fare increases and service cuts. In 2010, after Muni cut 10 percent of its service, David helped ensure that 60 percent of that service was restored ahead of schedule, and he jointly convened a task force with the mayor to present a full restoration plan. He worked to stop further fare increases, pushed for more bike lanes to ease traffic congestion, and passed legislation expanding car-sharing options. David also led the effort to establish a citywide goal of having 20 percent of trips by bicycle by 2020.

We can fulfill our Charter's "Transit First" mandate by better managing what we have to get the most out of our existing transportation system; using technology to make Muni and parking more efficient; prioritizing environmentally sustainable ways of getting around; and making transportation convenient, safe and affordable for everyone.

As Mayor, David will build a safe, efficient, 21st century transportation system by:

  • Implementing the Muni Transit Effectiveness Project
  • Expanding Our Bicycle Network and Infrastructure
  • Making Walking Safer and More Appealing
  • Improving Roads and Parking for Drivers
  • Promoting Car Sharing, Ride Sharing and Taxi Use
