Budget

By Lois M. Shade

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Charter Oak Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Million Dollar Shortfall
Currently Charter Oak Unified School District is looking at a 3rd year budget gap of almost $1 million and the ARRA money (American Recovery & Reinvestment Act) is looking very appealing. But it is not FREE money. If COUSD bonds, which repay investors with tax credits not money, are not bought after Charter Oak accepts and spends the money, Charter Oak is responsible for paying back that debt.

Paperwork has been submitted to County Office of Education indicating the money for the Charter Oak High School track and field would be paid for with lease money, deferred maintenance or a $2 million bond.

  • Are we in a time when our families and retired people can afford another additional cost on their property tax bill to pay for a new bond?

No more bond issues that tax an already strained economy. We don't need more debt.
