Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Jason A. Rothman

Candidate for
Governing Board Member; Pomona Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate

As your Board Member, I fought to:

-Use Measure PS facilities improvement money to enhance the appearance of our schools and ensure that our schools are the best they can be.

Our schools throughout the district have greatly benefited from the work that we have done. We've undergone huge infrastructure improvements to virtually every part of the school district, such as pipes, data capabilities, fencing, electrical improvements, concrete and facade improvements, curb appeal, fresh coats of school-colored paint, desks, chairs, grass and much, much more. Student achievement and morale has improved, and people are again proud to call each of their schools their own.

-Eliminate wasteful spending.

During my term of office, your School Board has eliminated millions of dollars of waste and redundancy. I've striven to keep cuts away from the classroom, while still achieving academic success and great looking schools.

-Streamline the volunteer process.

Volunteering with PUSD has never been easier. We've cut the red tape for our valued volunteers, to make it easy for you to volunteer with your children. See http://www.pusd.org/education/components/scrapbook/default.php?sectiondetailid=168&linkid=nav-menu-container-1-68986&PHPSESSID=d15cdcd4fa3050789d443b674dee3969 for more information on how to participate in the classroom and on field trips!

-Insure Adult Education, ROP, athletics, music and fine arts are funded.

Adult Education, ROP, athletics, music and the fine arts are extremely valuable programs to the Pomona Unified School District. The community has spoken out about keeping these important programs, and we've listened! We have thriving music and fine arts programs, to which we've recently approved a district-wide Visual and Performing Arts Plan.

-Increase the district's test scores.

During my term of office, the district-wide Academic Performance Index score has NEVER fallen. Each year it has increased, with several individual schools scoring in excess of the California State Goal of 800 API. I am committed to academic excellence as your School Board Member.

-Change the fieldtrip and transportation policy to let you decide how your children attend their activities.

Now, for the first time, parents can choose how their children attend their extracurricular activities. Before I took office, all students had to take expensive buses to their activities, which could quickly drain the funds of their club. Not anymore! A simple waiver and you get to decide how your students get there.

-Started the Joint City/School District Ad-Hoc Committee

During my term of office, the School Board started a committee with representatives from both of the cities of Pomona and Diamond Bar as well as the Pomona Unified School District. We use this as a valuable tool for fostering a cooperative relationship with cities who we represent.
