Position Statement Don McMackin

By Don McMackin

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Bellflower Unified School District; Unexpired Term Ending 12/06/13

This information is provided by the candidate
I have served our students well for this past year, focussing on improving our School District where possible and maintaining the core services. Service has always been part of my life and I want to continue to serve our cummunity and our students.
As a current school board member I have a strong belief that every student deserves a quality education. During these challenging times, it is important that Board members are well prepared to serve our educational community. I have prepared myself well by serving our youth through 35 years as a Boy Scout leader, including Cubmaster and Scoutmaster. I am privileged to have served for 30 years in the US Navy, retiring as a Captain, completing tours in Afghanistan and Kuwait. I have over 20 years of private sector business experience in management, operations and safety. This year, I began a new career as a JROTC high school teacher in Santa Ana. I earned my BA from UC Berkeley; completed Navy Nuclear Power School, and as a youth achieved Eagle Scout. I worked hard to ensure an outstanding superintendent was selected to lead our school district. I researched and supported an energy conservation program that can return thousands of dollars to support our educational programs. I will continue to fight the State for our share of our tax dollars, protect our instructional programs, including the arts and athletics. Our kids deserve the very best. Excellent schools, excellent futures!
