Strengthening Our Public Schools

By Steve Madison

Candidate for Council Member; City of Pasadena; District 6

This information is provided by the candidate
Steve supports adding "Strengthening Public Education" as a new guiding principle to Pasadena's General Plan.
The City Council doesn't control the public schools. But that doesn't mean it can't take action to help make schools better. In recent years Steve Madison has spearheaded City efforts to help schools cope with huge cuts in State funding. Pasadena now shares costs and facilities with the PUSD in key areas like campus security, transportation and recreational facilities. These arrangements not only help the schools, they provide more efficient services to all Pasadena residents.

Nothing is more important to a community than good quality schools. Pasadena has been improving in this regard, but progress is threatened by the State's financial crisis. Over the next four years, Steve will continue reaching out to School District leaders to find practical, cost-efficient ways of improving facilities, finances and performance.

Steve also supports adding "Strengthening Public Education" as a new guiding principle to Pasadena's General Plan. One reason is that school sites can pose major land-use decisions. For example, Steve is strongly opposed to proposals that Linda Vista and San Rafael schools be sold to private developers. He wants San Rafael School to stay open. And he has worked with the PUSD to use the closed Linda Vista site for daycare and park space.
