Increasing Student Achievement

By John Fernandez

Candidate for Board Member; Los Angeles Unified School District; District 5

This information is provided by the candidate
If elected, I will push for early intervention and remediation for students that start to fall behind. Students who fall behind must have a complete academic assessment done and have an educational plan formulated for them with yearly academic goals and specific learning objectives. Their educational plan should be driven by student data and renewed every year unitil they have reached satisfactory progress toward graduation. Parents must be notified as early as possible when their child is falling behind and must attend meetings at their child's school with their child's teachers, counselors, and administrators. Summer school must be mandatory, including Saturday classes and after school tutoring. Remediation classes must be small and personalized and could involve team teaching and could be interdisciplinary. Mandatory parent involvement is essential.
