School Safety

By John Fernandez

Candidate for Board Member; Los Angeles Unified School District; District 5

This information is provided by the candidate
Another major component of my platform is that I will advocate for safe, clean, and secure campuses, with adequate school police and state certified building inspectors where school construction is taking place. Many construction sites and projects are putting students at risk because the LAUSD has no building inspectors at these sites as requird by state law. If elected, I will call for the LAUSD to have state certified inspectors at every construction site to comply with the law. Before learning can take place, schools must be safe and secure. If elected, I will call for the strict enforcement of California ED Code provisions on school safety. Specifically, that all LAUSD schools must have a comprehensive school safety plan; that teachers must be notified that they have dangerous pupils in their classes; that students should not be subjected to harassment, discrimination, and bullying at their schools; and lastly, that random metal detection of students for weapons should be used on a regular basis.
