Smart Voter Full Biography for Maureen Carey

Candidate for
State Representative; District 164

This information is provided by the candidate

Born and raised in the region, Maureen's parents instilled in her at an early age the importance of giving back to the community in which she lives. Maureen has carried that lesson through life, and has demonstrated her commitment to improving her community time and time again. Whether working with others stuffing envelopes or helping to lead an organization, Maureen has consistently brought that same dedicated, can-do attitude to her work. It is that same attitude that will make her an effective representative of the people of the 164th Legislative District in Harrisburg.

Maureen may be best known by local residents for her work on local school boards and home and school associations in the Upper Darby School District. Maureen first became active in educational issues 21 years ago when she first joined the home and school association at Bywood Elementary, where her oldest son attended school. Two years later, she was selected to serve as vice-president of the group.

Motivated by her passion to provide a strong system of education for our young people and provide a top-quality education at the least possible financial impact to taxpayers, Maureen has remained extremely active in educational issues for more than two decades as an officer in the home and school associations of Beverly Hills Middle School and Upper Darby High School. Given her record as an advocate for both parents and students, Maureen was appointed and later elected a member of the Upper Darby School Board in 2005 and has served as Vice President since December 2008.

Maureen has been active in the local community in many other ways. She and her husband Dennis have dedicated more than two decades of commitment to and chairmanship of Caring and Sharing, Inc., an organization that helps at-need families and individuals in the local community by providing food and grocery items throughout the year, as well as presents for children during the holiday season. A grassroots organization, the group operates completely through the support of local residents and receives no government funding.

Maureen is a graduate of Immaculata University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Biology. She put her expertise to use at the world-renowned Wistar Institiute, a national center for biomedical, cancer and vaccine research, where she worked as a research biologist for eight years before leaving to raise her three children, Sean, Ryan and Ellen. Maureen and her husband Dennis continue to reside in Upper Darby.

Maureen is a member of St. Alice Church, where she served as an Altar Society Member, an Extraordinary Minister, Chair of the Food Pantry Committee, a CCD Catechist, and a Pastoral Council Member. She has been an active supporter of local firefighters, serving as a ladies' auxiliary member of the Cardington + Stonehurst Fire Company for more than two decades, including 5 years as President of the organization.

She has also been active in Upper Darby High School's Choral Music Association and Football Boosters. Maureen is also an active member of the National School Board Association and the Pennsylvania School Board Association Legislative Delegate.
