The District's "Can Do" Philosophy

By Pete Peterson

Candidate for Board Member; Conejo Valley Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
CVUSD has a philosophy of working around problems, including legal requirements, to achieve a desired end result, regardless of any unintended consequences.
This "can do" philosophy is one of the greatest strengths of the District. It can also be argued that it is a major weakness. Ignoring legal mandates can place the District at risk financially, and sometimes places the burden of financial liability on the members of the school board making them personally responsible.

I hope to bring my experiences as a 13-year Classified Manager for three large school districts, and as a 14-year school board member of a medium-sized school district, to CVUSD to ensure that the school district, the overall community, and the school board members are not unknowingly placed in a position to defend poor business practices.

As Director, Planning & Facilities, for CVUSD, I tried to make sure that the legal requirements of the various governing agencies were followed to minimize risk and liability. I want to continue this practice and make CVUSD the model of a school district utilizing best business practices in the day-to-day operation of the district.
