Biography

I was born and raised in Santa Rosa where I attended Santa Rosa City Schools. I have lived and worked here most of my life. My wife Carolyn and I have been together for over thirty years.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts in political science and English from Sonoma State University. I also acquired my California Teaching Credential and my Master of Arts in political science from Sonoma State University. My post master's work included adding a German major, completing a year of education administration classes and taking a variety of private and public finance classes and workshops through the UC and CSU systems.

I had the good fortune to be able to teach for 28 ½ years in the Santa Rosa School District. I spent three years at Hilliard Comstock JHS where I taught social science and English then moved on to Montgomery High School for three years where I taught US Government and English. I took a six year break from teaching during which I was involved in political contract work and commercial real estate leasing and investments. I worked for Grubb and Ellis in Sacramento and Keegan and Coppin here in Santa Rosa. I then returned to Piner HS and taught AP US Government and Politics, government, history and, English for fourteen years. I finished the last nine years of my career at Santa Rosa High School where I again taught AP US Government & Politics, government, history and English. I retired from public school teaching in June 2009.

I spent a considerable time during my first year of retirement reading about education and studying education policy. I have a particular interest in seeing the development of social science curriculum that stresses critical thinking, inquiry, and participation in public policy. My goal is the formation of a nonprofit that would develop and disseminate curriculum to interested social science teachers.

My personal interests include physical fitness, reading, music and travel. I am committed to doing whatever I can to improve public policy and I believe that quality education is the key to this.
