Create Safe and Affordable Housing

By Glendon "Anna Conda" Hyde

Candidate for Board of Supervisors; San Francisco County; District 6

This information is provided by the candidate
Inadequate rent control laws, skyrocketing rents, and expansive condo developments are pushing many of our neighbors out of their homes and onto the streets or out of San Francisco entirely.
Close loopholes in the current rent control law and extend rent control citywide. Loopholes in the current rent control law allow landlords and developers to lift rent control once meager building improvements are made. As a result, tenants become exposed to higher rents without a verifiable improved quality of life. Create affordable housing by redeveloping the mid-Market Street corridor. Provide tax incentives for Market Street corridor businesses that employ Market Street corridor residents. Attract tourists and tax dollars by showcasing artwork made by local artists, much like the marketplace near the Ferry Building farmers' market. The idea can be expanded to create greater revenue streams, build community, and preserve culture. Provide tax incentives for a full-service grocery store on the Market Street corridor that will feed and employ the neighborhood as an anchor retail establishment. Identify underutilized land in SOMA for the development of a public park. Improve the public school system so parents don't have to move out of the city in search of quality education for their children. Advocate for city leaders to intervene in the Academy of Art University's real estate monopoly. The University's insatiable acquisition of rent-controlled buildings-turned-dormitories must be stopped precisely because they deplete affordable housing options for our poorest residents.
