Priorities

Candidate for Council Member; City of Lemon Grove

Priorities and Progress
The top priority for Lemon Grove, like many cities in California if not the USA, is working toward financial stability and sustainability. Council has prioritized restructuring our business model for the past two years in an attempt to live within a declining budget. Between the sour economy and state raids on local city's treasuries, revenues have declined over the past few years. We've made numerous cuts at city hall including the elimination and restructuring of positions, salary adjustments and headway on pension reform. We've partnered with neighboring cities to consolidate fire services and continue to explore similar saving in other areas of operation. Engineering, public works and recreation continue to look for savings through outsourcing when savings dictate contract instead of in-house. The process is a work-in-progress with much work ahead. The issues and method are complicated and ongoing but the guiding priorities are from the public. They place a high value on streets and sidewalks, police and fire.

I think most people are smart enough to know that Lemon Grove is not the only city experiencing difficult times. I think it's important, however, for the public to understand that for all the anger out there the problems we face were created in Washington, Wall Street and Sacramento. At the local level most of us have acted responsibly, spending within our means and putting money into rainy day reserves only to have Sacramento raid our revenues to balance their budget. Lemon Grove is no worse off than many cities in California including LA and San Diego.

No one person can claim credit and no one candidate can claim salvation. Our path to a better tomorrow is a team effort. Lemon Grove has had an elected team envied trough out the county for many years. I often have to remind my colleagues to remember that as politicians, the public paints us with the same brush as Sacramento. My hope for the city I call my home that the voters will do their home work and return an effective team to work in 2011.
