Retired educator and 30-plus-year Redlands resident, Nancy Ruth White announced her candidacy for Redlands City Council on July 20, 2010.

Education and teaching work Ms. White taught in the Redlands School District for more than 30 years, having previously taught two years in Pacific Grove, California, and two years at Johnson Air Force Base in Japan for the Department of Defense. She graduated from the University of Redlands in 1966, with a degree in Speech Therapy and Communicative Disorders. Subsequently she earned two Master's Degrees in Pupil Personnel and Special Education from California State University, San Bernardino.

Community involvement Ms. White belongs to the San Bernardino United Church of Christ. She is active in and has held leadership positions in many educational, community and environmental organizations, including her present position as Finance Chair of the Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice. Throughout her career, Ms. White was actively involved in the California Teacher's Association (CTA), serving on the CTA State Council and Redlands Teacher's Association Executive Board. The accomplishment of which she is most proud, Ms. White has held leadership positions at all levels of her chosen field and has been involved with numerous organizations designed to improve the quality of life in this community. To give a few highlights, Nancy has served as:

  • School Representative to the Redlands Teachers Association (RTA) council (1979 - 2001)
  • Chair of the Education Task Force for the San Bernardino County Commission on the Status of Women (1975 - 1979)
  • Board Member on the Textbook Legal Compliance Committee for the California State Board of Education (1975 - 1979)
  • Chair and Vice Chair of the Board for the San Bernardino Community Action Partnership war on poverty program (1983 - 1998, 2003 - present)

Awards Nancy has been recognized by the community with the following honors and awards:
  • Citizen of Achievement from the League of Women Voters
  • Ted Bass Award for outstanding teaching in politics
  • National Science Foundation grantee
  • OWL Award for Outstanding Teacher from the San Gorgonio Service Center
  • Woman of Achievement in the 63rd Congressional District, sponsored by Assemblyman Bill Emerson

Based on her community relations and her accumulated organizational skills, Ms. White will bring to the Council a willingness to listen to the concerns of all citizens and to address those issues raised, as well as a new and innovative outlook and strong leadership.
