This information is provided by the candidate

My name is Dr. Heather Rae Reid. I am a mother of two beautiful children and have been an elementary school teacher since 1996. I moved to Newberry Springs in 1984 as a child and moved away in 1990 to attend college. Then my family and I moved back to Newberry Springs in 2001.

I am a proud graduate of Silver Valley High School. After graduating from Silver Valley High School in 1990, I went off to college. I graduated from California State University Long Beach in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and decided I wanted to become a teacher. I began my teaching career in 1996 when I became a substitute teacher for the Silver Valley Unified School District and for the Barstow Unified School District. I loved teaching so much that in the fall of 1996, I decided to go back to school to earn my California teaching credential. After entering the teacher's preparation program at California State University Fullerton, the Anaheim City School District hired me and gave me my first teaching position. I was an elementary school teacher in Anaheim, California for five years where I taught kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and third grade. During that time, I received my Master's degree in Education/Curriculum and Instruction as well as my California Clear Teaching Credential.

After teaching for five years in Anaheim, I decided to move back home to Newberry Springs. In August of 2001, I moved into my childhood home in Newberry Springs and began teaching for Barstow Unified School District. I have enjoyed nine wonderful years living in Newberry Springs with my son, daughter, and husband.

Over the past nine years, I have gone back to school and earned a Master's degree in Educational Administration and Supervision and a Doctorate of Educational Leadership with a specialization in curriculum and instruction. My education has provided me with knowledge of educational policies and theories designed to improve the academic achievement of our students. I love learning as much as I can to help today's students and tomorrow's future leaders.

I have been an elementary school teacher since 1996. During this time, I have served on many committees and leadership teams designed to increase the academic achievement of students. I have been an active member of the Parent Teacher Organization and School Site Council at my school. As an educator, I have also had the opportunity to work with district administrators to improve educational policies and practices so that the needs of all students can be met. I am currently a teacher on assignment for the Barstow Unified School District. My job as an educator includes working with all elementary schools in the district providing instructional support for teachers to help increase the academic achievement of students.

In 2008, I added a second job to my career. I began teaching online for the University of Phoenix. Over the past two years, I have worked with many college students pursuing a degree in education. I teach the Contemporary Issues of Education as well as Teaching as a Profession. I love working with future teachers and helping them understand what it is like being a teacher. Teaching online with adult learners has been a wonderful experience for me and has helped me grow as an educator.

I am looking forward to many more years as an educator. Being a teacher and educational leader is very rewarding. I love helping students achieve success in school and in the real world. I also love helping other teachers and future teachers as they make a positive difference in the lives of their students.
