Why I am running for Rialto School Board...

By Lacey Kendall

Candidate for Member, Governing Board; Rialto Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Having grown up here in Rialto, I would bring unique insight to the board of education. I am a true product of the Rialto Unified School District. As a student here, my own academic success seemed doubtful until I found the Eagles Eye newspaper and the Electronics Club at Eisenhower High School. Those two programs ignited a passion that kept me in school, elevated my grades and inspired me to pursue my AA, BA, MA degrees and a rewarding career in broadcasting and teaching college students. I am convinced that these kinds of programs are the key to getting kids excited about school and eventually raising test scores. Our teachers need stronger support. Poor fiscal choices in the past followed by teacher layoffs turned classrooms and families upside down in Rialto. I want to help keep our teachers in their classrooms and give them the resources they need, even as we face new and difficult federal mandates for education. Marketable job skills not only get our graduates into the workforce, they often make affording college a reality for young people. I know this first hand. That's why I am a strong believer in programs like ROP: programs that offer real job skills. I am so proud to be a member of this community ... to have witnessed the changes and growth of Rialto over the past forty years. There are so many things to love about this city, but I am convinced that diversity is the great ornament of Rialto. Having said that, I think our city and our schools could work even harder to better understand and celebrate the cultural nuances of all of our children, and fight to deliver every child to graduation day. I would be honored to help our board work to make each of these goals our reality.
