College & Career Tech Education

By Henry "Gus" Hawthorn

Candidate for Member, Governing Board; Fontana Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Students must be prepared to be successful after graduation whether they go to college, pursue technical training or enter the workforce. As a person working in industry I know what is required to ensure that all students reach their fullest potential.
Not all kids go to college. As an example, of our three children one has a college degree. All three are very successful. Kyle provides computer support for NC4, the Arlington, Virginia, based National Center for Crisis and Continuity Coordination, a company that delivers situational readiness and global risk management solutions. Allie is in a management position with Morgan Stanley leading teams in Baltimore, Maryland, and Mumbai, India. Trevor has his own company, Stratum Security in Ashburn, Virginia, an information security consulting company that provides computer and network security for clients around the world. The point is that Fontana students are as bright and capable as any in the world. While not all of them go to college all can be highly successful. Our job as board members is to make sure that the decisions we make will enable every one of our students to maximize their potential and allow them to lead productive fulfilling lives whether they go to college, pursue technical training or will be self-taught. To do so means we must offer an effective mix of advanced placement, college prep and career tech classes. It also means that as board members we make very clear that the expectation is that all students can and will learn and that every effort will be made to see that they excel.
