Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Kate Parker

Candidate for
Board Member; Santa Barbara High School District

This information is provided by the candidate

I believe that high-quality schools are the critical foundation for a strong community, and that our children need personal attention and a solid connection to their teachers in order to achieve their personal best. Students need a well-rounded education--not just core academics like English, math and science, but also instruction in art, music, foreign language, and career technical education.

I am excited to use my experience and expertise to continue to move the Santa Barbara School Districts forward so that every child has the opportunity for success, and our district is a state model in excellence. I want to:

  • Stabilize educational funding locally so that we can move back to smaller class sizes and provide more course offerings in our junior highs and high schools.
  • Increase the number of underrepresented students prepared to attend four-year universities and improve our career technical pathways.
  • Ensure that more students have attended high-quality preschool and are prepared to enter kindergarten.
  • Improve the district hiring process and increase teacher professional development opportunities.

I am the only school board member who currently has children in our schools, and it's vital to me as a parent and as a member of this community that we provide the best education possible to all children in the Santa Barbara area.
