>Establishes a direction and vision for district schools that reflects the consensus of the entire board, the superintendent and district staff, and the community as to what the students need in order to achieve their highest potential.

>Hires and monitors the superintendent, giving support as they carry out the direction and vision of the board.

>Conducts regular evaluations of the superintendent to ensure they are meeting out the goals of the board and sets policy for the evaluation of other personnel.

>Monitors student achievement and program effectiveness, and requiring program changes as needed.

>Adopts a fiscally responsible budget based on the district's vision and goals, and regularly monitors the fiscal health of the district.

>Ensures a safe and optimal learning environment for all students.

>Maintains responsible collective bargaining policies and agreements.

>Provides leadership for the community on educational issues and advocates on behalf of students and public education at the local, state and federal levels.
