stop firefighters' union control of the board of directors

By Glenn "Glenn Umont" Umont

Candidate for Director; San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District; 4 Year Term

Our retiring fire chief's pension of $284,000 on a base salary of $221,000 is outrageous. There are three union firefighters on the five-person board of directors, and I think that is patently wrong. It is absurd that our fire district has over 100 vehicles for 10 stations. It is absurd that our fire district has over 100 vehicles for 10 stations.
Outrageous: Our retiring fire chief's pension of $284,000 on a base salary of $221,000 is outrageous. It represents 129% of base salary. (For comparison: a retiring four-star general receives 85% of base pay for a pension of $181,000.) Firefighters' salaries in our district have gone up 10.5% in the two-year period ending February 1, 2009, while the Consumer Price Index has risen only 3.9%.

Patently wrong: There are three union firefighters on the five-person board of directors, and I think that is patently wrong. The union has spent tens of thousands of dollars to get union firefighters and other favored candidates elected to the board of directors.

Absurd: It is absurd that our fire district has over 100 vehicles for 10 stations. Compared to our neighboring fire districts, our cost is twice as high per 1000 population.

Money to burn: Our fire district spending is not restrained by Proposition 13, which would have limited the increases in spending to inflation and increase of population. The taxpayers should control spending, not the firefighters' union.
