Smart Voter Official Statement for Lance R. Smith

Candidate for
Governing Board Member; Durham Unified School District

This is a copy of information submitted to elections officials by the candidate

With my daughter in kindergarten, my personal interest in the quality of education provided by the Durham Unified School District is immediate and of utmost concern. My involvement with the community includes: coaching for 13 years with Durham Little League; serving more than three four¬year-terms on the Durham Recreation & Park District Board; serving currently on the Durham Mosquito Abatement District Board; founding The Forum, Durham's local newspaper; and managing the paper for over 26 years.

I will bring an informed, thoughtful, conscientious, and respectful approach to the process of decision making. Educators and administrators lend their expertise to create the best environment and opportunities for students. Parents, students, and everyone in the community deserves the best in service from these professionals. No less should be expected from board members.

These are difficult times for education in California and our district. Tough decisions lie ahead. As a board member, I will ask questions, do my homework, and act in the best interests of our students, faculty, community and district.
