Public Safety

By Gordon Wozniak

Candidate for Councilmember; City of Berkeley; District 8

This information is provided by the candidate
Berkeley has set ambitious goals to reduce our greenhouse gas emission by 80% and our solid waste to zero. I believe that we need to be equally ambitious in the realm of public safety and set a goal of zero crime. Goals are an excellent way to focus policy on achieving concrete results.
Increasing public safety in Berkeley is one of my top priorities. Whether it's challenging the Berkeley Police Department to make Berkeley a Zero Crime City or partnering with the UC, Co-Ops and CalGreeks for the Student Housing Disaster Preparedness Program, we can combat crime and make our neighborhoods safer by working together.

Berkeley Police Department has committed to reducing crime by ten percent every year over the next five years. But we need to hold them accountable. That's why I instated the BPD quarterly crime report requirement. When it comes to keeping our students, our families and our friends safe, there can be no room for error.

In the area of disaster preparedness, several student interns in my office worked with both the University, Red Cross and Berkeley's fire department to implement a special disaster cache & training program in the area where the Greek houses and coops are located + adjacent to the Hayward fault. And thanks to these efforts, there are now a half dozen disaster caches located in this area and hundreds of students have taken disaster-training courses.
