Gail Lightfoot is a retired professional nurse living with retired Senior Chief Journalist Richard E. Venable in Arroyo Grande, California, San Luis Obispo county. They have six children, 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. They spend their time (when not actively involved in party activities or campaigns) at Irish Fairs, attending Jazz concerts or traveling and visiting with other like-minded individuals or family. Richard is the Sec/Treas/Editor for the All Three Wars Veterans Assoc. having been on active duty during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He also edits and publishes the LA Libertarian for the Los Angeles Libertarian Party.

Lightfoot became a Charter member of the Libertarian Party in Jan. 1972, She has been active within the Libertarian Party of California since 1980. Lightfoot has served the LPC as a candidate for Representative in Congress four times (1984, 1988, 1990 and 1992) and as the Secretary of State candidate in 1998, 2002 and 2006. She was the LP candidate for US Senator from CA in 2004. Lightfoot has also served the LPC as State Secretary (1989), State Chair (1990, 1995-96) and Southern Vice Chair (1993-94). In 1990 and 1996 Lightfoot signed several ballot arguments and the Party's ballot description, as state Chair of the Libertarian Party of California. Lightfoot signed more ballot arguments in 1998 and 2000. Lightfoot with Richard's help produces a weekly public access television program that is transmitted on Charter Cable in San Luis Obispo County. The program, Why Liberty Matters, is a varied discussion by Lightfoot using books, articles and current events to explain why more Liberty [self control] and less government. [other control] works for us all. They recently began a new program titled Constitutional Issues which will read the Constitution line by line to reinforce the fact that it says what it says and mean what the `Framers' intended in 1787. The events leading up to the Revolution and the Constitution will be used to explain the intent of the `Framers'.

In 1990 Lightfoot represented the LPC in Lightfoot Vs March Fong Eu, a lawsuit regarding nominating candidates by convention and caucus. Lightfoot was an active Plaintiff along with other individuals and four political Parties asking the U.S. Supreme court to overturn Prop 198, the Open (Blanket) Primary. Quotes from Lightfoot's testimony are contained within the text of the District Court judge's decision and his footnotes to the decision. Lightfoot is pleased that the U.S. Supreme Court to ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in that suit. Lightfoot sat in the court to hear the oral augments in the case April 24, 2000 saying it is the high point in her life. She opposes the Top Two ballot proposition on the CA ballot in June of 2010.
