Irvine City Councilman Steven Choi is a life-long educator and small business owner, who first immigrated to the United States from Korea, after serving as a Peace Corps language instructor for the State Department in 1968. He continued his post-graduate education and earned his Ph.D. in Library and Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh.

Since then, Dr. Choi has taught at several universities and colleges including University of Southern California (USC) and University of California, Irvine (UCI) among many others. He founded and directs the highly successful Dr. Choi's Academy based in Irvine.

Steven Choi was first elected to the Irvine City Council in 2004 and re-elected to a second term in 2008. Prior to joining the council, Steven served for six years as an Irvine Unified School District Trustee.

As a Councilmember, Steven has quickly earned a reputation as a taxpayer advocate and a tough, no-nonsense small business advocate. He has stood firm for the free market economy and has worked to cut red tape and other hurdles that small business owners face.

Steven and Janie Choi have lived in Irvine since 1993, where they attend Bethel Church. Steven's son, Daniel, earned his B.S. from Stanford and his M.D. from UCSD and is now working as a resident at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. His daughter, Michelle, earned her B.A. from UCSD and now attends the University of Michigan Law School.
