Closing the Achievement Gap
As County Superintendent I will make closing the Achievement Gap a top priority. All of our children and young people should have the opportunities and support needed to be successful in school. The San Mateo County Office of Education can provide vital support to schools as they focus on closing the Achievement Gap though insuring all teachers are highly qualified, are provided with ongoing professional development, and are given access to accurate and timely data to help guide instruction.
Achieving School Funding Reform
California's system of school funding is broken and needs to be fixed. Strong public schools are key to our form of government and to an economy that can compete in today's global markets. California woefully underfunds its schools. I support efforts now underway to reform school funding.
21st Century Schools for 21st Century Students
The County Office can play a vital role in working with local school districts to move our schools from a factory-based 19th century model of education to an information-age 21st century model. With the accelerating rate of change, we cannot begin to teach our students all they will need to know, but we can help them learn the skills they will need to navigate successfully through the 21st Century.
