Balancing the budget and preserving public safety

By Sandra Hutchens

Candidate for Sheriff-Coroner; County of Orange

This information is provided by the candidate
During my tenure as Sheriff, I have made $50 million dollars in cuts. I made those cuts in an unprecedented way--I cut 42% of my command staff. I did this to preserve the public safety. I do not want the public to bear the price of law enforcement budget cuts. I created a new classification, Correctional Service Assistants, who will staff 35% of our County Jail positions. This will save Orange County taxpayers another $10 million dollars a year. I am seeking a contract with Immigration and Custom Enforcement that will generate additional revenue for public safety and help ICE expedite deportation of criminal illegal immigrants. I requested and received Board approval to charge inmates for the cost of booking them into our jail. I will continue to look for ways to meet our budget shortfall by making strategic cuts and looking for ways to generate revenue.
