If we DON'T Reduce the size of our Government we CANNOT Reduce the size of our DEFICIT!

By Ken Holmes

Candidate for Sheriff-Coroner; County of Marin

One issue that needs to be addressed is the continued use of fully trained deputy sheriffs in the custody division of the Sheriff's Dept. Although it is the optimum model for staffing a jail, it is also THE most expensive. Many counties in California use correctional officers for jail staffing. These officers are less expensive to train, have a lower pay and benefit package and thus are less of a burden on the retirement system. Through a long range strategic hiring plan Marin can reduce the number of officers receiving the higher pay & benefit package without diminishing the current level of service and protection provided in the jail. This would save over $ 1 MILLION dollars annually!! I intend to implement such a plan within my first three months in office. Marin must prepare NOW for the continued shrinking of the State revenues to our county.
