Candidate for
Sheriff-Coroner; County of Marin

This information is provided by the candidate

For more than 35 years, I have faithfully served the residents of Marin County as an investigator, administrator and elected public servant. I have been elected your Coroner three times and received national acclaim from Victim's Rights Groups for my leadership and public advocacy.

In 1979, as a sworn investigator, I participated in all seven investigations of the most infamous homicides in county history, the Trail Side Killer murders. In 1984, I was appointed Assistant County Coroner prior to my first election as Coroner 12 years later.

In addition to my public service, I've been extremely active coaching youth sports, including Little League, Pop Warner football and for many years the Dixie Girls Softball Program. I have also served as a volunteer Cub Master, Boy Scout leader and as President of our local PTA.

I raised my two children in Terra Linda and my adult daughter lives in Novato. I am the proud grandparent of 2 girls and 3 boys. I am remarried and now live in Novato with my wife, Lisa and her two children.

As your elected Coroner, I serve on the Executive Board of the California State Coroner's Association. I am a standing member of their state Legislative Committee and + most important + I am Chairman of their state Academic Scholarship Committee. As a longtime advocate for Suicide Prevention programs, I have received national recognition for my sponsorship of new and innovative prevention initiatives and serve on the Marin Suicide Prevention and Grief Counseling Advisory Board.

The newly created Office of Marin County Sheriff-Coroner demands a 21st Century law enforcement professional capable of integrating two independent investigative agencies with vastly different functions, responsibilities and cultures. I believe my exceptional record of public management -- which includes having submitted 12 consecutive balanced budgets and never increasing my investigative or administrative staff, despite growing case loads and constantly evolving technological requirements -- uniquely qualifies me for this new challenge.

I believe my hard earned reputation for integrity, fairness and accountability among both Marin's law enforcement and medical communities is witnessed by the many leaders in both fields who encouraged and actively support my candidacy. I'm proud to have earned their trust.
